My Basic Rock Climbing Course Journey at SVIM, Mount Abu: What to Expect
If you ask any mountaineer in India where they started, many will point toward the rugged, sun-baked granite of Mount Abu. Home to the Swami Vivekanand Institute of Mountaineering (SVIM), this destination is a rite of passage for those looking to transition from casual trekking to technical climbing.
I recently completed the Basic Rock Climbing (BRC) course at SVIM. Here is a breakdown of the grit, the gear, and the growth I experienced during those transformative days.
1. The Arrival: Discipline and Granite
SVIM isn't a resort; it’s a training ground. From the 4:00 AM rising bell to the evening de-briefs, the schedule is designed to build mental and physical endurance. The campus is surrounded by iconic rock formations like Toad Rock, which serve as your "classrooms."
2. Learning the Technical Basics
The course starts with the fundamentals of "movement on rock." You learn that climbing isn't just about upper body strength—it’s about footwork, balance, and trusting your gear.
-
Knots & Hitches: Learning to tie the Figure-8, Bowline, and Clove Hitch until you can do them blindfolded.
-
Bouldering: Short, low-altitude climbs that teach you how to use your fingers and toes to find "holds."
-
Anchoring & Belaying: Understanding the life-line that connects you to your partner.
3. The Gear That Made the Difference
The granite in Mount Abu is abrasive. I quickly realized that the gear you wear is just as important as the technique you use.
-
Trekking & Climbing Pants: I wore our JAG Discovery Series Pants. The ripstop fabric was a lifesaver against the sharp granite edges. I saw many students in regular tracksuits end the day with torn knees—technical gear is a must. Product Link: https://tinyurl.com/3nbasuxm
-
Performance T-Shirts: Sweating under the Rajasthan sun is inevitable. A JAG Summit Seeker Tshirt kept me dry and prevented the "chills" once the wind picked up at the top of a pitch. Product Link: https://tinyurl.com/338c9jdt
-
Approach Shoes: Before putting on tight climbing shoes, a pair of rugged CTR OD 4 with high-traction soles was essential for navigating the boulder-strewn paths to the climbing sites. Product Link: https://tinyurl.com/ykv9w2kx
4. The Thrill of Rappelling
The highlight for most is the first time you lean back over a cliff edge for Rappelling. It is a test of nerves. Controlling your descent while 50 feet in the air requires focus and, more importantly, clothing that doesn't snag in the descender or carabiner.
5. Why SVIM?
SVIM is one of the most affordable and high-quality institutes in India. Whether you want to pursue mountaineering professionally or just want to gain confidence for your next high-altitude trek, this course is the best place to start.
Essential Packing List for SVIM Mount Abu:
-
2-3 pairs of Technical Trekking/Cargo Pants (Avoid shorts; the rock will scratch your legs).
-
4 Quick-Dry T-Shirts.
-
Full-sleeve shirts (to prevent sun and rock burn).
-
A sturdy Rucksack to carry your water, lunch, and climbing hardware.
-
Sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat.
Conclusion: From Hiker to Climber
Completing the BRC at SVIM changed how I look at a mountain. It’s no longer just a path to walk on; it’s a puzzle to solve. If you’re planning to take the plunge into rock climbing, make sure you’re equipped with gear that can handle the grit of Mount Abu.
